Smuckers to be Honored for Family Tradition of Giving

Wooster, Ohio: For the Smuckers, philanthropy is truly a family affair. Named the 2014 Friend of Philanthropy Award recipient, the family will be recognized October 8 by the Wayne County Community Foundation.

As far back as Jerome (J.M.) Smucker, who was born in Wayne County in 1858, the Smucker family has been dedicated to finding ways to help meet the needs of the community. Every generation since has followed the example set by J.M. – giving of their time and resources for the betterment of the community.

In establishing the Friend of Philanthropy Award, the Foundation recognizes the difference that individuals, and families, can make through personal commitment and leadership. With a tradition of sharing and service, the Smucker Family exemplifies the spirit of the award. Tim and Jenny Smucker will be on hand to accept the award on behalf of the entire Smucker Family.

The Foundation’s annual dinner will be a celebration of philanthropy. Robert Eckardt, Executive Vice President of the Cleveland Foundation will be the keynote speaker. Established in 1914, the Cleveland Foundation was the first community foundation. Now celebrating a century of service, it inspired a global movement, giving rise to a new philanthropy, a new way of participating in community, and a new vision for the future.

Today, Wayne County Community Foundation is one of more than 700 community foundations in the United States, collectively managing more than $48 billion in assets and making grants of approximately $4.5 billion a year to improve life in their communities.
